Thanks for the In-Between

November 29, 2013

We live in a basement with two rooms.  My parents and grandmother live above, and all four generations share one kitchen.  When we are not on the road and living out of our trusty Prius (which we do 75% of the time), we are here, being initiated into the sense of communal living one might find in India.

Today is Black Friday, and since we are rarely home, we are celebrating it with a little web-surfing on the couch.  Some days I yearn for overseas, when we will have our own apartment—however humble—and get into the “real life” there.  But then I wonder, did God not call us to this season too?  Is it his desire for me to live with my entire focus somewhere else?  I know it isn’t.  I know we were meant to live and breathe in the here and now while also working hard for the future.

As I spent a few moments this morning with Jesus, I sensed Him bringing my focus to this day and this basement.  Yesterday we spent Thanksgiving with family and a few friends.  We went for a walk in the crispy air that caught our breaths after a lavish feast of turkey, sweet potato casserole and Gramma’s pumpkin pie.  There was a lot of laughter as Dad brought out an old love letter to Mom from 37 years ago. At times I have wondered how he won her over with a surprise proposal (when they’d never dated), lots of letters mailed from overseas, and just several weeks of dating.  But listening to his letter I understood…. He was abruptly transformed from a gallivanting ladies’ man/ traveler to a sobered, faithful, life-long friend/admirer when he decided to pursue my mom.  He wrote of his days in India as well as his hopes for a future with her and I thought, No wonder she was won over!

After organizing our basement, I woke up today to a somewhat de-cluttered, cozy space, where I could actually think.  As I sat with coffee in hand I was struck with gratefulness at this in-between season.  I realized that I could actually rush over and even miss the value of the in-between.

Three nights ago I endured a horrible visit to the dentist because in the stress of constant travel with a 9 month old I seem to be grinding/gritting my teeth.  Hence, pain in my jaw, teeth and head and a hypersensitive nerve.

Yuck. What a wake up call.

My parents always said, “Home is where we are together”, and they meant it, whether we were in another family’s house in a unfamiliar country, a hotel room, a grandparents’ basement, or a house we had decorated and made to “ours”.  By the time I graduated high school we had attended 8 schools in 4 different countries.  Home really was where we were together. Home is not how furnished, how finished, or how personalized.

Home is where we are together, and we are at peace with one another and with God.

Today I am thankful to be home.

We are so very blessed.  Next thanksgiving I will be finding ways to live in the “here and now” in a mountain town in the Himalayas with new friends, roads, new words, and a very new perspective.  On our last Thanksgiving here—for a while—I give thanks for the in-between.

Thank you for this reminder to be thankful for the in between. For the here and not to rush into the there. The Lord brings us there in His time and we are thankful for that as well!

Alika, absolutely!! I think I’m relearning this lesson over and over in each season. Thankful for Maile and a few other close friends God has uniquely given in this season as well. So blessed.

Thank you for the blog! Enjoyed reading an up-date and where you are and your plans for your future. You inspire me to live in the “here and now”. I sometimes get ahead of myself but then realize that today is all I”m promised.

Thanks Liz. Thinking of you guys and praying for you as well in this time. Being back with parents/family is always such a brief season when we look back on it, and I’m thankful for family that we WANT to live with! Look forward to meeting your little guys one of these days.

Thank you also for reminding me in a beautiful way, to be content in this unique place. I am thankful for His faithfulness, and to learn to be content and enjoy my time here.

Jackie, we’ll be in your area for the month of February so maybe we can get together over coffee. 🙂

Thanks for a great perspective. As we look “forward” to shifting gears in January, and leaving this season, the city we have lived for 5 years, moving into a 600 sq ft cabin many states east of here, and beginning the task of raising up new partners in ministry, it is tempting to skip the “in between”. Thanks for the reminder not to do so. Love to you and yours!

Holly, thinking about your 600 sq foot cabin I am very thankful for our basement right now!! Blessings on you guys as you plan and go….

Dear Becca…. And God…. Thanks for the reminder and timely word. During these 16 months since my husband passed away I’ve spent do much time stretching an straining for the next footprint; uncomfortable with my new station. I’ve spent most of my energy pushing rewind and fast forward only to find my self with a headache from the whiplash and my system frozen on pause. As I sit here I now I realize the presence of God, my refuge and strength, has been here in the “in between” days waiting for me to rest in the pause and drink in the refreshing! The verse He gave me in in Sept. ’96 and again in Dec. ’12 He reminds me of today. …Is 58:11 “The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Praise The Lord for this station in life.

Patti, wow. So powerful. Thanks so much for sharing. His word is just as impactful no matter what “in between” we find ourselves in.

Beautifully written Rebecca…somehow no matter where we are, we are always living in the in-between…the more of God in the here & now! Love you!

Donna, it’s so true. Whether we have “arrived” or are “in between” is somewhat a matter of perspective. Thanks for the note. Love you guys!

Hey, Rebecca. We met once. In your parents’ living room. : ) Thank you so much for writing this. We are leaving in January and I can relate to all these emotions you expressed. It blessed me. I have a blog, too, but am not so good at staying consistent with it. Would you mind if I shared this? I think it would help my family and friends understand where we’re at a little more. : ) Praying for you guys!

We have said from the beginning that this part of the journey is just that, part of the journey. Not a means to an end. I have tried so hard for the last year and a half to soak in the here and now, not just hold on to tomorrow when tomorrow is not even guaranteed. Hope you enjoy your last months at home!

Polly, you are absolutely welcome to share this. I love to write, and I’m thankful when God puts something on my heart and it does something for others who read it. So, yes! Really sense that I’m supposed to blog more in the coming days, so the comments keep me motivated, even with the blessed distractions of a 9 month old. And thanks for the note… hope you guys are enjoying this season where you are as well.

Thank you for this oh so timely reminder. Relearning this lesson as well. We are “in-between” in so many different ways right now, and it leaves us feeling…. powerless. But I think that’s the point, isn’t it? To be still and just know that He is God. And to be thankful in all circumstances. This is all I can do right now, and I think it’s all He wants from me right now.

Thanks again for the reminder. Your references to India made me chuckle! I hope we can experience it together someday over a cup of chai. 🙂

I hope we can too!! There will always be a cup of chai waiting for you at my apartment. 🙂 And “powerless” is such a good word…. I find that it makes a sort of control-freak out of me, which bothers not only the Holy Spirit, but my husband. SO… working on embracing powerlessness today.
